Process and governance design for asset/pipeline evaluation for a large medical device company
Defining and weighting key parameters for decision making, and designing a process for consistent asset evaluation
Context
The Challenge
- The large medical device manufacturer required the development of a process and governance framework for the consistent, evidence-based assessment of new assets for potential acquisition (or existing pipeline assets for further development)
- This required the transparent identification of all factors influencing asset value/prioritisation across business development, commercial, marketing, market access, pricing and HEOR functions within the company (to be weighted and incorporated into a streamlined process for asset evaluation)
Requirements
Project Objectives
- Define the key parameters driving asset value/ prioritisation across business development, commercial, marketing, market access, pricing and HEOR functions
- Weight the key parameters (and sub-parameters) according to their importance within the overall decision-making process
- Develop consistent processes/governance framework for rollout in the global organisation covering the evaluation framework for individual assets (and trade-off decisions within the portfolio) and the templates for collating data/assumptions to complete the analysis
Methodology
Our Approach
- We completed a workshop with the cross-functional team to explore the domains driving asset value/ prioritisation
- A preference elicitation exercise was implemented to inform priority domains/sub-domains and their weighting within the assessment of individual assets
- We incorporated the findings into a standardised process for asset evaluation including the overall model for evaluation, required input data (and the format/process for collecting this), and templates for visualising/presenting outputs
Outcomes
Value Delivered
- The company received a comprehensive process for evaluating new business opportunities (or existing pipeline assets) according to priority domains with shared ownership across business development, commercial, marketing, market access, pricing and HEOR functions
- The process was rolled out to the global organisation, to set the standard for asset assessment requirements, and collation/visualisation of the analysis to inform decision making
